Administrators
Welcome Administrators!
You are key to a successful implementation and program wide integration of Evidence-Based Reading Instruction (EBRI) in your Adult Education Program. Did you know that EBRI is the U.S. Department of Education and OCTAE's reading initiative to improve adult reading skills? Adult learners need to be able to read advanced levels of text in order to transition to post-secondary education, career and technical education, or enter the workforce. Illinois DAISI data shows that state-wide, EBRI students show significantly higher level gains compared to non-EBRI students. In addition, WIOA specifies that "the essential components of reading instruction" be incorporated into adult education instruction:
The essential components of reading instruction as defined by WIOA law means explicit
and systematic instruction in -
A) phonemic awareness*;
B) phonics*;
C) vocabulary development;
D) reading fluency, including oral reading skills; and
E) reading comprehension strategies.
Pub. L. 113-128, July 2014. Title II, Sec. 203(8)
*Illinois EBRI & STAR training combines A & B above into one component called
Alphabetics.
